There is something about a farmers market that you simply cannot recreate online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You hear conversations everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Someone is discovering a fruit they’ve never tasted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Someone else is holding a loaf of bread and asking how it was made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Families walk past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dogs visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Vendors greet one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And for a few hours, shopping becomes something much more personal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That is what I love about market day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For visitors, farmers market morning might begin when they arrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For vendors, it begins much earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Products have to be packed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jars counted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bread organized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tables prepared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Displays arranged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And there is always that moment after loading everything when you wonder:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“What am I forgetting?”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Eventually we arrive, set everything up, and suddenly all those boxes and containers turn into a Sunny\u2019s Kitchen Delights table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then the first customers begin walking through the market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And everything changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One of my favorite parts of the market is watching someone taste something for the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe they weren’t planning to buy preserves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe they simply stopped because the jars looked interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then they taste a sample.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is usually a little pause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And sometimes comes the expression every food maker loves to see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That look that says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n “Oh… that’s really good.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Food connects people very quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You can spend five minutes explaining a recipe, or sometimes you can simply hand someone a small sample.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The food tells the rest of the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Something else happens when you attend markets regularly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n People come back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n At first, they are customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then you recognize them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You remember which preserve they bought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They tell you what they did with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Someone explains that their family finished the bread in one evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Another person comes specifically looking for the flavor they tried last time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Those small conversations begin building something that goes beyond selling food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They create community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Farmers markets are one of the best places to listen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Customers ask questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They suggest combinations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They talk about flavors they remember from childhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They ask whether we’ve ever considered making something with a particular fruit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Some ideas disappear by the end of the conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Others follow me home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And occasionally one becomes a new product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is part of the beauty of a small business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The distance between the person making the food and the person eating it is very small.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes they are standing directly across the table from each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For me, market day is not simply about selling jars and bread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is about meeting the people who eventually take those products home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe that preserve ends up on Sunday breakfast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe the sourdough becomes part of a family dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe someone gives one of our jars as a gift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We don’t always know where the food goes after it leaves our table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But I love imagining all the kitchens it eventually visits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The best market days aren’t necessarily the ones when everything sells out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They are the days filled with conversations, laughter, unexpected connections, and people discovering something they enjoy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Of course…<\/p>\n\n\n\n selling out isn’t bad either. \ud83d\ude0a<\/p>\n\n\n\n
